ABOUT THE ACADEMY

CLASSES

Set in the pastoral town of Canterbury, New Hampshire, the Academy offers classes from beginner to professional level in a small, intimate atmosphere. The Academy specializes in garment sewing, construction, fit, pattern drafting and design.

Susan Andriks, owner and primary instructor at the Academy, has over 35 years of sewing experience, dating back to the 7th grade, when she learned to sew in a Home Economics course. Susan comes from a long line of crafters - her mother and aunts all sewed, as well as her grandmothers.

Over the years, Susan has practiced her craft, learning everything she could from books and the few classes offered in her area. After moving to New Hampshire in 1989, Susan was fortunate to have taken the Professional Dressmakers Course from a local dressmaker. This is one of the courses Susan now teaches.

In 1990, Susan established The Fabricsmith, a successful custom dressmaking business specializing in bridal gowns and special occasion dresses. In 2000, her book, Bridal Gowns, How to Make the Wedding Dress of Your Dreams, was published © 2000, Palmer & Pletsch). She has written numerous articles for Threads Magazine (the Taunton Press). Susan also appeared in a 3 part bridal series with Nancy Zieman on "Sewing With Nancy" (PBS television). Susan retired from the custom bridal business in 2007.

Wanting to share her love of sewing and design and realizing the need for quality sewing instruction, Susan began teaching classes in 1998. She established the New Hampshire Academy of Sewing in 2006.
